Why is project work both effective and fun? Through these workshops we hope to answer this question.
As teachers we appreciate that children have a range of learning needs. These include: intellectual skills; learner independence skills; physical/motor skills and social skills.
Project work in the English classroom encompasses all these aspects, but more importantly, through carefully chosen and well-designed projects, teachers can make learning language effective, fun and motivating. Project work encourages the natural acquisition of language.
In this series of workshops we will examine the theoretical background to experiential learning; how it addresses the needs of learners in a holistic way but for most of the sessions we will turn our attention to more practical aspects. We will look at how to do a project from the first idea to the finished product, and ways of displaying the project in an imaginative way. We’ll examine ways of meeting institutional needs: how to tie the project in with the syllabus and with assessment – both formal and informal; and how to keep track of individual and group progress.
Most of all, practical ideas for primary pupils will be explored. Like your students, you will learn by doing! Participants are encouraged to bring ideas for project work to share with the group. By the end of the workshops everyone will
understand the advantages and the challenges of project work
have had practice in trying out a number of projects
have planned a new project to take home to do with their class.
I hope you can join me, to share ideas and practical activities.
