What's MIZUHIKI?

What is Mizuhiki?

Mizuhiki is called Mizuhiki because it is a string made by rolling paper into a string (koyori) and then drying and hardening it. These days, you'll often see them in gift bags and bento boxes, but Motoyui, who ties the hair of a sumo wrestler, is one of Mizuhiki.

About Mizuhiki

History

It goes back to the time of the envoy to Sui, but in the Sui at that time, the gifts were tied with red and white linen, and it seems that it was used in the palace.

Then, during the Asuka period, Ono no Imoko was dispatched as a mission to Sui in search of advanced technology and culture from the developed countries of Sui and Tang. It seems that a string-shaped thing dyed separately was hung.

It is said that this prayed for the peace of the return trip and showed that the gift was a sincere item.

This is the first time Mizuhiki has entered Japan.

After that, it was from the Meiji era to the early Showa era that it spread while deepening the traditional color as a mizuhiki work.

In addition, the string that ties the wrestler's hair, "Motoyui," is a thin string that binds the hair, and this is also one of Mizuhiki. Until then, hemp strings and braids were used, but in the Heian period, the original knot made from paper was invented, and Mizuhiki changed from hemp strings to paper strings.

After that, with the Meiji Restoration's haircut decree, the use of mizuhiki decreased, and along with that, the production area also decreased, and the area has changed the material of mizuhiki to the development of "shugi-bukuro", "yui" and "mizuhiki crafts". I did.

And now, as you often see in gift bags, Mizuhiki work as an art with excellent design has become popular.

Color of meaning

The colors of Mizuhiki are generally red and white and gold and silver, which are considered to be congratulatory colors at weddings. Recently, various types of Mizuhiki have come out, and they are used for design Mizuhiki with accessories and animals and plants as motifs .

Red and white: Used for personal purposes such as year-end gifts, midyear gifts, admissions, and sympathies.

Gold and silver: Used for prestige such as weddings, company relations, awards, etc.

Black and white: Used only for commuting and funerals.

Yellow-white: Used for subsequent events.

Silver Silver: Sogin is sometimes used for new religions unrelated to Mizuhiki's Yin-Yang idea.

Meaning of number

The number of Mizuhiki for wedding celebrations is 10 while the number of Mizuhiki for general celebrations is 5.

This comes from 5 x 2 = 10 and is said to have meanings such as "both families come together" and "joy is piled up".

Specialty areas of mizuhiki.

Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture (Kaga Mizuhiki) It

may be correct to say that Kaga Mizuhiki is a city famous for mizuhiki work rather than a production center for mizuhiki strings.
