We have been deepening our interdependence, society has been changing rapidly, and problems have been more complicated.
So we need the ability to cooperate with various people beyond the difference of nationalities, religions, cultures, gender, wealth and so on in order to solve problems common to us more than ever.
But unfortunately, the educational system of each country including Japan has not succeeded in nurturing such abilities.
There is a limit to the modern education system that children of same age who live same place obtain the same knowledge.
New education is needed.
So what should I do?
The answer we found is simple.
Children just do judo with various people all over the world
Judo has the power to overcome various differences and strongly connect with people.
We believe that children should know the diversity and splendor of this world and the complexity of the problems involved
through connecting with various people.
The purpose of this project is not to train "athletes".
It is to foster "leaders" like Kano Jigoro sensei, judo founder, who continued solving complicated social problems in cooperation with various people.
We believe that the third innovation is necessary for judo.
Looking back, we thought that there have been two major innovations in judo.
The first was to change Jiu-Jitsu which was technique to kill and wound opponents into educational method.
"Soldier" became "educator".
The second was to adopt championships like Olympic Games. "Soldier" became "athlete".
We think that the third is to rebuild judo as a method to connect with people. It will be supported by current IT revolution.
Judo itself has power to connect with a variety of people, but children around the world do not have the opportunity to use that power.
We are confident that when this third innovation happens to judo, a new educational system suitable for the globalizing world will be born.
Please imagine that people in over 200 counties are doing judo together. Even if it is partial, it might be the first educational system shared by “mankind” .
We will begin the first step of this third innovation from Japan,
the host country of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

私たちは相互依存を深め、社会は急速に変化し、問題は複雑化しています。
だからこそ、私たちには、そして、これからを生きる子どもたちには、私たちに共通する様々な問題について、国家、宗教、文化、性別、貧富などの違いを乗り越え、ともに協力しあって解決していく力がこれまで以上に必要とされています。
しかし、残念ながら、日本を含め、各国の教育システムは、このような能力を育むことに成功していないようです。同じ地域に住む同じ年齢の人々が同じ知識を得る、という近代の教育システムには限界があり、新しい教育が必要とされているのです。
ではどうしたらいいでしょうか？
私たちが見つけた解答はシンプルです。
子供達が世界中の様々な人と柔道をすること
柔道には様々な違いを乗り越えて人と強くつながる力があります。
子供達に必要なことは、
この世界の多様さと素晴らしさ、そして、抱える問題の複雑さを、
多様な人とつながることを通じて知ることことだと思うのです。
このプロジェクトの目的は競技大会で活躍する「アスリート」を育成することではありません。嘉納治五郎先生のような、社会が抱える複雑な問題を多様な人々と協力しながら解決する「リーダー」を育成することです。
そのためには、柔道に第３のイノベーションが必要だと考えています。
振り返ると、柔道には、過去２回、大きなイノベーションがありました。
１回目は、戦国時代の殺傷術であった柔術を教育手法に変えたこと。「軍人」が「教育者」になりました。
２回目は、オリンピックに象徴される「競技大会」を取り入れたこと。「軍人」が「アスリート」になりました。
これから必要となる３回目のイノベーションは、「人とつながる手法」としての柔道だと私たちは考えています。
ITの発達により、国語や理科などの知育はどこでも学ぶことができるようになりました。
以下を想像してみてください。
子供達が世界を巡り、多様な人々と一緒に稽古をする様子を。
世界のあちこちの道場で、様々な国籍の柔道少年少女が集い、一緒に稽古をする様子を。
多様な人々とつながることが核心的カリキュラムとして位置づけられている公教育を。
私たちは、柔道にこの第三のイノベーションがおこったとき、グローバル化する世界に適した新しい教育システムが生まれる、と考えています。それは部分的であっても「人類」が共有する教育システムといえるかもしれません。
私たちは、この第三のイノベーションの一歩を、2020年東京オリンピック開催地である日本からはじめます。
