What is Donou Technology??

"Donou" is a Japanese Word that means wrapping soil in a gunny bag. Donou technology involves using gunny bags filled with murrum, gravel or farm soil and tightly tied to repair impassable road.

It makes only locally available materials.
I is labor based technology.
It is easy to learn.
It makes the road durable and passable with simple maintenance.

BEFORE The Training/ Uko umuhanda wari umeze Mbere y'amahugurwa.
Any vehicle could not pass this part of the road. Rutsiro, Mukura.

During The Training/Mu gikorwa cyo gusana uwo muhanda(mu mahugurwa).
CORE offered training to the road maintenance cooperative in Mukura sector and Manihira sector and they fixed this section. Ring culvert was set to protect road from rain water flow.

AFTER The Training/uko umuhanda wahindutse nyuma y'amahugurwa .
Nicely fixed. Now any vehicle can pass here.

BEFORE The Training/uko umuhanda wari umeze Mbere y'Amahugurwa.
Half of the road was washed away by the rain water from up hill. Kirehe, Nyamugari.

During The Training/ uko umuhanda wasanywe Mu mahugurwa.
CORE offered training to 7 road maintenance cooperatives in the District of Kirehe.

AFTER The Training/Uko umuhanda wahindutse Nyuma y'amahugurwa.
Now the road was fixed.

The road condition in this mashland was muddy and slipperly, hindering movement of farmers and vehicles' movement. Ruhango, Mwendo.

CORE offered training to Mwendo road maintenance cooperative in the District of Ruhango.

AFTER The Training/uko umuhanda wahindutse nyuma yo gusanywa.
Even during rain season, the road is in good condition.

The Mayor of Kirehe visited our training site and encouraged participants to take this skill very well, so that the District government can promote local employment for public road maintenance projects.

6 steps to Repair the road using Donou Technology

1.
Identify an impassable section of the road. Clear the mud and stagnant water if any.
(Rusizi 2018)

2.
Clear the site, excavate appropriately, and make a flat road base.
(Ngororero 2020)

3.
Lay Donou bags in the excavated area and compact them act as the road base course.
(Nyamagabe 2019)

4.
Fill the space in between Donou bags and compact them appropriately to act as column supports and prevent lateral dispatchment.
(Nyaruguru 2019)

5.
Make gravel/murrum wearing course after compaction Donou bags to prevent them from sunlight and traffic wear.

6.
A completed Donou maintained section of once impassable road.

3.
Lay Donou bags in the excavated area and compact them act as the road base course.

Isuzuma rya dono tekinoloji ryakozwe n'ikigo cy'igihugu gishizwe ubwikorezi mu Rwanda.

RTDA: Road and Transport Development Agency
(under the MININFRA: Ministry of Infraastructure)

RTDA has performed Quality Control on our project sites.
Based on the data collected by the QC, RTDA recommends Donou technology as useful technology for road maintenance.

We have been really happy to be trained by CORE Rwanda in road maintenance with Donou Technology. It was very encouraging that our Mayor came to see our training site and told us that the District government is ready to hire us to fix other roads. Our training site was challenging, we worked very hard and we learnt a lot.

We have achieved a lot with CORE Rwanda.The impassable road was adequately fixed. Our Site really required to use special materials like ring culverts but with our combined effort as Youth we have come to good results.We are ready to continue our activities applying Donou technology especially in remote areas. Fixing roads will unable our population to reach markets for their agricultural produces.Thanks to CORE Rwanda to initiate such innovation in our District.
